One of the six and the largest hydropower projects planned to be built on the Jhelum River in the State of AJK is the Kohala hydropower project and is being implemented by Kohala Hydro Company (Pvt.). Moreover, the Kohala Hydropower Project is a proposed run-of-the-river and the high head project of 316 meters that will be located near Kohala, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan.

Furthermore, KHPP has been listed as the “Actively Promoted Project”. In the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) since August 2014 with both the Governments of China and Pakistan. Furthermore, KHPP is being developed in the private sector under the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model. and it shall be transferred free of cost to AJK after 30 years.

As a matter of fact, the project has been reviewed by the Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) and also by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition, it is verified by the International Finance Corporation


This dam site is on Jhelum River near Sarran Village 40 km upstream from Muzaffarabad and a 20 km long tunnel connects to the powerhouse which is located at Barsala 7 km upstream from Kohala Bridge.

Kohala $2.7 billion hydropower Project

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC)

China three Gorges Corporation bid (January 7, 2015) to cater to Pakistan’s renewable energy and worth $2.7 Billion. However, CTGC has finalized a plan to construct an 1124 MW Hydro-power Project in Kohala. The 5,149GWh of electricity will be generated in a year with 122MW guaranteed output and 4,617 hours of capacity utilization. However, CTGC possesses the most advanced and scientific ecological concept in hydropower project design and development in compliance with international standards.



Kohala Hydropower Project with the cost of around $2.7 billion will get its financing through Debt and Equity. Foreign banks led by the consortium of China Development Bank are expected to provide 85% of the debt financing, while 15% of debt is expected from local banks which are led by the syndicate of Habib Bank.


However, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation is an Australian based-firm that provides consulting services on major infrastructure projects around the world and In addition, to review and update the ESIA it undertook a feasibility study and detailed engineering designs of the Kohala hydropower project

According to the sources, for all its national importance and interests. The construction period of 6.5 years will provide thousands of job opportunities for local people and not only this but also water use charge and taxes will be a huge and steady income for AJK.
