About Instagram:
As we all know about Instagram. It’s an app in which we can share photos or videos with our friends. Instagram was launched on 6th October 2010. It is owned by Facebook. Instagram is now popular in the world. The total number of monthly active Instagram users are more than 1 billion.
Main Issues:
It’s a trend now but as well it causes some issues, Two main issues are:
- Firstly, ‘online bullying’. Rude or mean comments from users but you can’t block, unfollow, or report them because it will escalate the situation, especially when you know them in person.
- Secondly, tension about the number of likes on your post, or the competition of youngsters. It leads them to shame or disrespect.
‘Shadow-ban’ or ‘Restrict’ Feature:
Instagram take action on Online Bulling and Announced the new feature ‘restrict’ or ‘shadow-ban’ which will restrict the user. From some resources, we came to know that it will use artificial intelligence to root out disrespect, insult, and shaming. It is tested in some countries, and the results are positive.
In the ‘restrict’ feature there is one more thing which is stated by “Adam Mosseri” head of Instagram:
“We have started rolling out a new feature powered by AI that notifies people when their comment may be considered offensive before it’s posted,
From early tests of this feature, we have found that it encourages some people to undo their comment and share something less hurtful once they have had a chance to reflect,”
He added that:
“We can do more to prevent bullying from happening on Instagram, and we can do more to empower the targets of bullying to stand up for themselves,”
If anyone is restricted, he or she can comment on your post but it will only be visible to them. It will not be visible to other viewers. On the comments of the restricted user, Instagram will ask the permission that does you want it to be viewed by other viewers or not.
As I mentioned it in the start that sometimes you don’t want to block or unfollow someone because you know them in real life and want to avoid an awkward situation, So this feature will save you.
Adam Mosseri said:
“We wanted to create a feature that allows people to control their Instagram experience, without notifying someone who may be targeting them.
It’s our responsibility to create a safe environment on Instagram.”

Now Instagram hides post’s likes for removing pressure from their users. This feature trial began on Thursday in several countries. Firstly it is stated that the trial began in Canda in May. Now it will be rolling out in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Brazil, Italy, and Ireland.
‘Hide likes’ restricts users to see the number of likes on other’s post. But you are able to see the number of likes on your own posts.
This feature will affect youngsters in a positive way. Instead of competition, shame, or disrespect. They will start posting the things which they love without the tension of likes and the feeling that they will be judged.
Instagram said Users, can still check the list of likers of others post by clicking on it. It will not affect Measurement tools of business.
Director of policy Mia Garlick said that:
“We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love,”
