What is IELTS?

It’s the world’s most popular English language proficiency test. It is known as the International English Language Testing System. This test is for study, work, and migration, with more than three million tests taken in the past year. Moreover, the IELTS results are recognized by more than 10,000 organizations, including educational institutions, employers, professional associations and governments, in 140 countries around the world. Versions of IELTS

There are two versions of IELTS. These are the following;

1. IELTS Academic

This version of IELTS measures whether your level of English language proficiency is suitable for an academic environment.

2. IELTS General Training

This version of IELTS measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. Therefore, it reflects both workplace and social situations.

IELTS Test

Its a test of all four language skills. These are the following;

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking.

IELTS Test Format

Four test sections-> Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

1. Listening

Its Duration is 30 minutes. So, the listening test has four sections. Moreover, you will listen to four recorded texts.

Section 1

A conversation between two people.

Section 2

Lecture set in an everyday social context.

Section 3

Talk between up to four people regarding educational or training context.

Section 4

Lecture on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.

2. Reading 

Its Duration is 60 minutes. It has 40 questions. Moreover, the reading test contains reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding the logical argument.

Academic version Reading

This academic reading version includes three texts. That range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical.

General Training version Reading

Hence, this reading version requires you to read extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines.

3. Writing 

Its Duration is 60 minutes.

Academic version Writing

This Writing version includes two tasks.

Task 1

Firstly, you presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram. And then, asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words.

Task 2

Finally, you write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

General Training Writing version

This Writing version includes two tasks, which are based on topics of general interest.

Task 1

Firstly, they asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation.

Task 2

Then, you asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

4. Speaking 

Its duration is 11 to 14 minutes. In this test, you asked to answer general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as your home, family, work, studies, and interests.
